The political repercussions of May 27 – Menderes: Had May 27 not happened, Turkey would have been an EU member 45 years ago

Noting that the devastating coup d’état that took place on May 27, 1960 also ruined Turkey’s international reputation, Aydın Menderes said, “Had May 27 not happened, Turkey would have joined the EU or the common market, as it was known back then, 45 years ago.”
